Lessons: Starvation or Survival

Impacts and choices farmers made from them in many countries

2 min Introduction of facilitators, participants & simulation. We learned of these impacts and choices farmers made from them in many countries.

1 min Divide into groups of 4 or five

3 min Distribute crop cards. Have groups decide what crops to plant

5 min. Is weather the only impact? Pass out local and global impact cards and have each group read theirs out loud. Each time ask: Is this happening anywhere? Where? This emphasizes the reality. Recompute, record

2 min Check Malnutrition charts Read aloud the diseases and recompute.

4 min Ask: If this were your life year in and year out how would you feel?
Record. If you felt like this how would you act, what would you do?
Record. Is this happening anywhere?

30 minutes 2nd year repeat of above except impact cards have two choices which each village must choose from. They read their choice aloud and hear result, then read the other one and hear that result. Compute
If this were your life how would you feel, and how would you act?

4 min Discussion of why the different reactions?

2 min Look at list of development projects. Which ones would have helped you?

A Simulation that can be set it in Central America, SE Asia or Africa or Women in Development in Africa

Starvation or Survival, a Simulation that can be set it in Central America, SE Asia or Africa or Women in Development in Africa. Very successful with middle, high school and adults at universities and community groups.

It simulates subsistence farmers lives (50% of the world's population) with the local and global impacts on their lives.

Throughout the activity we ask: Is this happening, where? Villages are groups of 4 or 5.

This makes it real.

Final discussion explores why most villages do better the second year when they make choices.

WIth the pre-post activity two periods are needed for this activity. The pre-post puts people in pairs as expert advisors to select which development projects a development organization should fund.

The question asked at the post session is : Who would these projects help?
